Petr Pokorný (2014)

Petr Pokorný (born April 21, 1933 in Brno ; † January 18, 2020 in Prague ) was professor of theology and specialist in the New Testament. He was a professor at the New Testament Chair of the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Charles University in Prague . He was also the director of the Center for Biblical Studies at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic .

Life

Between 1939 and 1951, Petr Pokorný attended the general school and the classical grammar school in Brno and graduated from high school in Prague . From 1951 to 1955 he studied Protestant theology in Prague, followed by two years of military service. Since 1955 he provided ecclesiastical service in the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren (Czech: Českobratrské církvi evangelické ), first as vicar in the Prague district of Vinohrady , then as pastor in the district of Vršovice . In 1963 he received his doctorate in theology, followed by a study visit to Oxford in 1964 . In 1967 he completed his habilitation in Biblical Studies - New Testament in Prague and taught as a lecturer at the University of Greifswald . Since 1968 he has taught at the Protestant Faculty of Charles University, first as an assistant, since 1970 as a lecturer , since 1972 as a professor. In 1993 he received his PhD in history, specializing in Greek literature. From 1990 to 2005 he headed the New Testament chair, from 1990 to 1996 he was vice dean and from 1996 to 1999 dean of the faculty. He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .

In 1960 Pokorný held a Bible study for the “Young Christian Peace Conference” together with a German and a Polish theologian. He was a member of the Christian Peace Conference , at the 5th All-Christian Peace Assembly in Prague in 1978 .

Petr Pokorný had been married to Vera Kellerová since 1961 and had three daughters and a son.
