Petra was a Christian rock band that formed in the 1970s. Petra is Greek and means rock .
After 33 years as a band, Petra announced on May 24th, 2005 that they would split up. The final concert took place on the night of December 31, 2005 to January 1, 2006 in Murphy, North Carolina.
Despite the official dissolution, the band played a few concerts afterwards.
Petra released 24 albums and sold nearly 10 million records. It won four Grammys , 10 Dove Awards, and was inducted into the Gospel Music Association 's Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2000 .

In early 2010, five band members who belonged to Petra in the mid-1980s announced that they would reunite under the name Classic Petra . An album that will include both new songs and new recordings of old Petra songs, a DVD and a world tour under the title Back To The Rock was announced.
Bob Hartman is the only Classic Petra member who was also a member of Petra at the time of the dissolution. Hartman is also the only member who was part of the band from its inception to its dissolution, even though he did not go on tour between 1995 and 2003.
