Petra Bendel (* 1965 in Dorsten ) is Professor of Political Science and Academic Director of the Central Institute for Regional Research at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Career

Bendel studied Romance studies , English studies and political science at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . Between 1987 and 1988 she worked as a lecturer at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas in Bilbao / Spain and from 1988 to 1992 as a research assistant at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Heidelberg. In 1996 she switched to the Institute for Ibero America Customers (GIGA Institute) Hamburg as a research assistant with a focus on Central America. In 1996 she did her doctorate at the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on Latin American party systems.

After another two years of scientific activity in Heidelberg, she went to the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1997, where she has since been the management of the Central Institute for Regional Research.

In 2008 , Bendel completed her habilitation at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg with a paper on European migration policy, for which she received the habilitation award from the Philosophical Faculty. In 2011 and 2012 she worked as a visiting professor and substitute professor at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg ; In 2012 she turned down a call to the professorship in International Relations and European Politics there.   

Areas of work and memberships

Bendel's research focus is migration and refugee policy, on which she has presented numerous publications and expert reports . Petra Bendel is a founding member and deputy chairwoman of the Center for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (CHREN) at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität. She chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and advises numerous expert commissions at European, national and regional level. She has also been a member of the Expert Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration (SVR) since 2016 (as its chairman since 2019). Bendel is a member of the specialist commission appointed by the federal government on the framework conditions for the ability to integrate .
