Petra De Sutter (born June 10, 1963 in Oudenaarde , Belgium ) is a gynecologist and politician ( Groen ). From 2014 to 2019 De Sutter was a member of the Belgian Senate , she won a mandate in the 2019 European elections and has since been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group .

Life

Education and professional career

Petra De Sutter graduated from Ghent University in 1987 with a degree in medicine . In 1991 she received her PhD in biomedical sciences before moving to Chicago for two years to do basic research on the genetics of egg cells (humans and mice).

In 1994, she was recognized as a gynecologist and admitted to higher education. In 2000 she became a lecturer, then a full professor. Since 2014, when she joined the Senate, she has been a part-time professor and head of the reproductive medicine department at Ghent University Hospital.

Member of the Belgian Senate (2014-2019)

In the 2014 European elections , De Sutter was number two on the list of the Flemish Greens . Although the party won votes as such, it was able to win a second mandate. Subsequently, Groen Sutter co-opted for a seat in the Belgian Senate . As a trans woman, she was the first openly transgender Belgian woman to be on a voting list.

In addition to her role in the Senate, De Sutter was a member of the Belgian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 2014 to 2019 . As a member of the Socialist and Greens Group, she was a member of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons, the Committee on Rules of Procedure, Immunities and Institutional Affairs, the Subcommittee on Integration, the Subcommittee on Public Health and Sustainable Development and the Subcommittee on Ethics. She was rapporteur for the Assembly on the Rights of the Child on Surrogacy (2016), on the use of new genetic engineering in humans (2017) and on the conditions of reception of refugees and migrants (2018).

Member of the European Parliament (since 2019)

On September 15, 2018, De Sutter announced that they would run for one of the two top candidates for the European Greens in the 2019 European elections. In the primary, however, she lost to Bas Eickhout ( GroenLinks ) and Ska Keller ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). De Sutter then ran only as the top candidate for the Flemish Greens ( Groen ). Groen was able to record slight votes in the European elections, but won, as before, only one mandate. De Sutter has been a member of the ninth European Parliament as part of the Greens / EFA group . For her group, she is a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and a deputy member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs .
