Petra Winter (veterinarian, 1966)

Petra Winter (born October 17, 1966 in Steinbach, Lower Austria ) is an Austrian veterinarian and university professor . Since 2016 she has been the rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna).

Life

Petra Winter studied after graduation from 1984 veterinary medicine at the Veterinary University of Vienna, where she with a dissertation on 1992 culling reasons in pigs in a farm doctorate . Afterwards she worked as a freelance veterinarian. From 1994 she was university assistant at the 2nd Medical Clinic and head of the udder health / milk laboratory working group at the Clinic for Ruminants of the Vetmeduni Vienna, where she qualified as a professor in 2003 in the field of internal medicine and disease theory in cloven-hoofed animals and then became an associate professor at the Clinic for Ruminants and headed the pig clinic from 2006 to 2008. At the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) she headed the Institute for Veterinary Medical Examinations in Mödling from 2008 , most recently as deputy head of the department responsible for the strategic direction of the veterinary medicine division.

In 2010 she returned to Vetmeduni Vienna as Vice Rector for Teaching and Clinical Veterinary Medicine. In May 2016 she was appointed interim rector to succeed Sonja Hammerschmid , and in December 2016 she was elected rector . In September 2019 she was confirmed in office until 2025 by the University Council.

Since 2005 she has been a member of the European College of Bovine Health Management , since 2006 President of the Austrian Society for Veterinarians, since 2008 a member of the Austrian Animal Disease Expert Group and since 2010 an expert on the Austrian Animal Welfare Commission.

She was awarded the Hermann Zittmayr Prize for special scientific achievements in the dairy and dairy industry, and in 2005 and 2006 she received the Teacher of the Year award .
