Diplomate of the European College
Diplomate of the European College is a standardized form of postgraduate specialist training and examination in veterinary medicine in Europe .
organization
The Diplomate title is awarded by colleges , virtual associations of specialists in the respective field from across the EU. They establish a statute that also defines who can become a member. The individual colleges are recognized by a non-commercial organization, the European Board for Veterinary Specialization (EBVS) based in Utrecht . This first gives a provisional recognition, after 5 years at the earliest, full recognition. The colleges are evaluated by the EBVS every 5 years. The model was the American Board of Veterinary Specialties of the American Veterinary Medical Association .
The prerequisite for admission is the state approval to practice the veterinary profession in the respective country. The candidate must then complete a 2.5–3 year full-time position or up to 7 years part-time position with a diploma in the relevant subject. During the specialization, a scientific paper must be published in a peer-reviewed journal. At the end of the training there is a central exam lasting several days. A Diplomate has to be re-evaluated every 5 years.
The Diplomate is now awarded for 23 subject areas, 13 of which are fully recognized by the EBVS. The first advanced training course was established in veterinary surgery ( Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgery , Dipl. ECVS ). It was founded in 1991 and has been fully recognized since 2000.

Diplomas and national specializations
Successful acquisition of the Diplomate title also entitles you to use the national training title in some European countries (Denmark, Belgium). In other countries this can be awarded on application, in Germany only in the area of some veterinary associations . The Netherlands and the United Kingdom have already phased out their national continuing education courses in subjects for which there is a college.
