Petri Church in Wendhausen

The Evangelical Lutheran Petri Church is located in Wendhausen in the Reinstorf community in the Lower Saxony district of Lüneburg .

location

The church stands on the northern edge of the historic center of Wendhausen. To the south of the church there is a larger war memorial . The associated cemetery is located in the northern area of the church grounds.

history

Presumably there was a baptistery in the same place as early as the 9th or 10th century . However, there is no clear evidence of this. The patronage of the church initially belonged to the St. Michaelis monastery in Lüneburg. The church has belonged to Reinstorf since 1550.

The original stone church was almost completely renovated between 1847 and 1849. The round tower was removed. Wall remnants made of field stones from the previous building were partially included in the new building. In the meantime the church had a belfry facing south . The west tower was not added until 1879.

The interior was modernized in 1956. Renovation work was mainly carried out in the area of the altar.

The Peter's Church is now next to the St. Matthew Church in Barendorf , the St. Vitus Church in Reinstorf and the St. Nicholas Chapel in Vastorf to parish Reinstorf in church district Lüneburg in Sprengel Lüneburg in the Lutheran Evangelical Church of Hanover .

Architecture and equipment

Detail of the field stone masonry

The church is a rectangular brick building with a three-sided choir closure in the east. The western part of the masonry of the nave in the north, as well as in the south, consists largely of field stone masonry . The eastern part with the end of the choir rests on a small field stone foundation, but is otherwise made of bricks. The hall church has a massive three-storey west tower . The roof of the west tower is covered with slate , the nave, on the other hand, has a roof covered with brownish tiles .

In the eastern wall of the chancel above the altar table there is a round window with stained glass. It shows a dove surrounded by red and orange elements. Above the main entrance in the west tower is a window with stained glass depicting a rooster.

A statue of Peter from the 15th century is in a wall niche. Peter, the namesake of the church, is depicted as the Pope with three golden hoops as a crown.
