The Evangelical Lutheran St. Nicholas Chapel is in Vastorf in the Lower Saxony district of Lüneburg . The small chapel contains a valuable carved Gothic altarpiece as well as several centuries-old wooden statues.

location

The chapel is located on a small hill in the middle of the historic village center. The church is surrounded by isolated trees on a meadow. A war memorial is located on the meadow southwest of the chapel .

history

The exact time when the original chapel was built is unknown. What is certain is that a chapel must have stood at the current location as early as the 12th or 13th century. The patronage of the chapel belonged at least temporarily to the St. Michaelis monastery in Lüneburg .

The shape of the chapel was structurally changed several times. The direct predecessor of today's chapel had strong granite walls and a wooden spire. The current building was built between 1900 and 1910, with parts of the building from the late Middle Ages also being preserved. Large parts of the current furnishings date from the time of the renovation.

Services are now only held in the chapel on special occasions and major holidays. They include not only the Matthew Church in Barendorf , the St. Vitus Church in Reinstorf and Peter's Church in Wendhausen to parish Reinstorf in church district Lüneburg in Sprengel Lüneburg the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover .

architecture

The St. Nicholas Chapel is a small brick building with a recessed rectangular choir . West above the main entrance the band has a roof turret from truss . The roof turret is covered with slate , the nave with red bricks. The nave and the choir are equipped with pointed arched windows.

The chapel is a hall church and has a simply designed interior. The choir is slightly raised and opens up to the nave with a pointed triumphal arch . The nave is trapezoidal and has a wooden ceiling. There is a gallery above the main entrance .

Furnishing

The chapel contains a late Gothic triptych with almost fully three-dimensional painted carved figures. The altarpiece was made by a Lüneburg artist. According to various sources, it dates from the 15th or 17th century. The altarpiece shows Jesus Christ , Mary and the twelve apostles .

In addition, the chapel has a large wooden figure of St. Nicholas , which was made at the beginning of the 16th century. The figure of Nicholas is above the door to the sacristy in the choir room. To the left of the door there is a figure of Saint Barbara , whose age is unknown but is higher than that of the statue of Nicholas. The chapel also contains a badly damaged wooden figure of St. Anne .

The organ of the chapel is on the gallery above the main entrance.
