Petro Iwanowytsch Prokopowytsch ( Ukrainian Петро Іванович Прокопович * June 29 jul. / 10. July  1775 greg. In Myttschenky in Baturyn , Chernigov Governorate , Russian Empire , † March 22 jul. / 3. April  1850 greg. In Paltschyky in Bakhmach , Chernigov Governorate, Russian Empire) was a Ukrainian beekeeper .

Prokopovych is considered a pioneer of commercial beekeeping because of his research in traditional beekeeping, which brought great practical advances . Thanks to him, beekeeping became a separate branch of agricultural production. One of his most important inventions was that of a honeycomb frame in a separate chamber of the beehive . He was the first in the world to remove honey from the hive without destroying the honeycomb, and was also the founder and teacher of the world's first beekeeping school.

Petro Prokopowytsch came from an old Cossack family and studied at the Mohyla Academy in Kiev . Then he was in the military, which he left as Podporutschik in 1798 and then devoted himself to beekeeping. In 1839 he already owned almost three thousand bee colonies, which earned him an income of 20,000 rubles.

Honors

Prokopovich received the Order of St. Vladimir 4th class. In 2000 the Ukrainian Post issued one of his postage stamps. On the occasion of Petro Prokopovytsch's 240th birthday in 2015, the Ukrainian National Bank issued a two- hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait as part of the series of outstanding personalities of Ukraine .
