Grade

Podporutschik , German Unterporutschik ( English Third poruchik / Junior poruchik ), is an officer rank from the group of lieutenants in a number of Slavophonic armed forces. According to the NATO rank code , the Unterporutschik would currently be comparable to the OF-1 classification . With the exception of Podporuchik OF1c in the Czech armed forces until 2011, the rank should not be confused with the OF1c rank of sub-lieutenant .

A possible ascending order of precedence would be:

  • Unterporutschik / Podporutschik (Unterleutnant / Lieutenant)
  • Porutschik (lieutenant / first lieutenant)
  • Nadporutschik (Oberporutschik / First Lieutenant)
  • Captain (OF-2)

Name origin

The name of the basic rank Porutschik comes from the Russian noun "порука / poruka" - guarantee . Initially, the Porutschik had to accompany commanded soldiers. He guaranteed in writing that the soldiers arrived in full and on time at the place ordered. The rank later developed from this task.

In the Russian army , the poruchik was introduced to regiments with a new structure in the mid-17th century . A Porutschik was usually an assistant to the company commander and later a platoon leader . Further ranks followed.
