PetroSA , or in detail Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa ( SOC ) Limited, is the state-owned mineral oil company in South Africa . As a state-owned company in the energy sector, it reports to the Central Energy Fund (CEF) and is therefore accountable to the Department of Energy . PetroSA was formed in 2002 through the merger of Soekor E and P (Pty) Limited, Mossgas (Pty) Limited and parts of the Strategic Fuel Fund , another division of the CEF. PetroSA is based in the Parow district of Cape Town . Another administrative location is located in Sandton . For European business customers, PetroSA has a branch in Rotterdam .

PetroSA's key corporate goals include:

  • the exploration and production of oil and natural gas ,
  • participation in and acquisition of smaller and international oil companies,
  • the production of synthetic fuels from offshore gas in one of the largest GTL refineries in the world in Mossel Bay ,
  • the development of a domestic refinery and liquefied natural gas logistics infrastructure,
  • the marketing and distribution of oil and petrochemical products.

The Oribi and Oryx production areas are located in the ocean about 120 kilometers south of Mossel Bay . Oil production in the Oribi field has existed since 1996. PetroSA is active in the FA-EM gas field as well as in the south coast gas fields and the Oribi and Oryx production areas - all on the continental shelf off the coastline. The Mossel Bay GTL Refinery gets its raw material from here. Outside the South African territory , PetroSA has production activities in Equatorial Guinea and Namibia .

history

The history of PetroSA goes back to the establishment of Soekor ( Afrikaans Suidelike Olie-eksplorasiekorporasie , English Southern Oil Exploration Corporation (Pty) Ltd. ) in 1965, with the aim of promoting the exploration of mineral oil deposits in the vicinity of Beaufort West . However, the petroleum reserves found in the process were estimated to be too low to be considered for commercial use. In 1965, natural gas deposits were discovered during drilling off the South African coast. Soekor began drilling additional exploratory wells in the offshore area in 1970 in a joint project with Rand Mines and US Natural Resources . The land-based prospecting for oil deposits were in 1978 by SOEKOR due to lack of prospectivity set.
