Peter Burg is a city in the South African province of Free State (Free State). It is located in Letsemeng Township in Xhariep District .

Petrusburg has 8,435 inhabitants (2011 census), including 944 in the core town or sub-place Petrusburg and 7491 in the township settlement of Bolokanang, which is located to the south-east, beyond National Route 8 .

history

In 1891, a Dutch Reformed church was built on the site of the Diepfontein farm owned by the farmer Petrus Albert Venter , around which the village developed. He was named after Venter's nickname. West of the city, the Battle of Paardeberg took place in 1900 , during which British troops defeated the Boer Army .

Economy and Transport

The main source of income is agriculture, including sheep breeding as well as grain and potato cultivation. Artificial irrigation is sometimes used . The music festival Aartappelfees ("Karfoffelfest"), which takes place every year in March, is significant for tourism .

Petrusburg is located on National Route 8 , which among other things connects Kimberley in the west with Bloemfontein in the east. The R48 branches off in a south-westerly direction in Petrusburg and leads towards Koffiefontein and De Aar . Petrusburg has a station on the Kimberley – Bloemfontein railway line, which is served by freight traffic.
