The Pfalzkirche Karnburg is a Roman Catholic parish church in Karnburg , a village in the political community of Maria Saal in Carinthia's Zollfeld . The church and the surrounding village are at the foot of the Ulrichsberg . It is consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul.

history

The former Palatinate Church was built around 888 for the visit of King Arnulf of Carinthia and used as a royal palace . Because Arnulf held the Roman-German imperial dignity from 896 to 899 , the church was also an imperial palatinate church and part of a defensive system with walls, ramparts, ditches and palisades that is no longer preserved. The church was first mentioned in documents in 927. It is a foundation of the Salzburg bishops. The sacred building with its Carolingian architecture is considered the oldest church in Carinthia and one of the oldest in Austria .

Architecture and design

A wall tape surrounds the church and the cemetery. The church itself is a single-nave building with a retracted, square choir and a western vestibule tower from the 15th century, which is crowned by a pointed helmet. The old church building is considered a rare example of preserved Carolingian architecture in Austria; the original masonry is clearly visible. Roman relief and inscription stones are embedded in the church walls and used as spoilers . There are grave inscriptions from Roman soldiers and locals with various representational elements, sarcophagus lids, inscription fragments and steles.

The octagonal Gothic font stands in the cross-vaulted porch of the church. The Gothic entrance portal with a pointed arch carries a door with iron fittings. The wooden flat roof in the church interior dates from 1929. Round-arched Romanesque windows break through the masonry in the choir and nave ; A passage is walled up on the north wall, above it is an image of the hand of God , next to it is a Carolingian or Ottonian column with a cauldron-shaped capital . Remnants of Romanesque wall paintings have been whitewashed on the end wall of the choir. The baroque crucifixion group is from the 18th century, the baroque figures of the ship show Saints Paul and Oswald on the north side and Saints Peter and Sebastian on the south side. The crucifix in the door niche is from the 17th century.

Anna Chapel

The medium-sized church is connected to the Gothic Anna chapel through the southern sacristy. The chapel has a small choir. A brick roof turret with a pointed helmet is placed on the half-hipped roof . Small ogival windows break through the outer wall. The ossuary is located under the Anna chapel . In the sacred building there are figures of Saint Anne with Maria, Johannes Nepomuk and Franz Xaver. On the walkway between the church and chapel with Roman times reliefs chart recorder and servant representation and a fragmentary inscription norischem cymatium to see.
