The Roman Catholic parish church Bad Mitterndorf is elevated above the center of the municipality Bad Mitterndorf in the Liezen district in Styria . It is consecrated to St. Margaret and, together with the parishes of Kumitz and Tauplitz, forms the parish association Hinterberg in the dean's office of Upper Ennstal - Styrian Salzkammergut . The church is a listed building .

history

The church is first mentioned in a document in 1335. In 1420 the church was incorporated into the Canons' Monastery in Wiener Neustadt . In 1491 it was awarded to the Order of St. George in Millstatt am See . Between 1577 and 1773 the church was subordinate to the Jesuit College Graz . The late Gothic nave dates from the middle of the 14th century, the choir and the vaults were built in the 15th century. In 1951 the church was restored.

Church building

The choir is high and closed by a 3/8 end. Above it is ribbed vault . Two-lane tracery windows are embedded in the end of the choir. The nave is separated from the choir by a pointed arched triumphal arch . It is about the same width as the choir, but slightly lower. The two-and-a-half-bay nave has semicircular services on the pillars . Above the nave is an irregular and wide-meshed ribbed vault. The ogival south portal in Gothic style was exposed in 1969. The three-axis west gallery is also Gothic. The ribs of the bulge have been removed. The parapet has been pulled far forward in recent times. The sacristy is built to the north of the choir. Directly east of it, attached to the nave is a small chapel. Both rooms can be entered through Gothic sacristy doors with iron fittings. To the west of the nave is the three-story Gothic church tower with a pointed helmet .

Furnishing

The excellent furnishings were created by the sculptor and painter Johann Fortschegger . The high altar from 1771 was built with a free-standing tabernacle . The altarpiece “ Assumption of Mary ” is flanked by gilded statues of Saints Rupert and Virgil . The altarpiece of the Barbara altar from 1782 shows the "decapitation of St. Barbara ". The picture comes from Martin Johann Schmidt ("Kremser Schmidt") and was created at the same time as the altar. A restoration took place in 1952. The Marien Altar was built around 1770. The good central statue shows " Mary with the child". It is flanked by statues of St. John Nepomuk and St. Aloisius . In the chapel north of the nave, the Anne Altar from 1783 is built. On this there is a figure of St. Joseph with a green stick and St. Joachim . On the pulpit from 1800 there are gilded figures of the four evangelists and a relief of the “sower”. In the choir there are two candlestick angels that could have come from Fortschegger. In the nave there is a late Gothic lecture cross from the beginning of the 16th century. There are three baroque pictures hanging in the church: one shows St. Margaretha and comes from the second quarter of the 18th century, one shows St. Francis von Paola and the third picture from 1747 is a Missins picture with the motif of the Holy Trinity . The first two pictures are hanging in the Anna Chapel today. There is also a twelve-sided late Gothic font made of red-colored marble. On the lid is a group of figures representing the baptism of Christ. The group of figures created by Fortschegger was created at the end of the 18th century. On the gallery are the remains of the old church stalls from 1700. The tombstone of Johann David Betscher († 1692) made of red marble is also worth mentioning.

The bell was cast by Martin Feltl in 1755. In front of the church is a baroque crucifix that could have been made by Fortschegger. It was created around 1800.
