Parish church of Bruneck
The parish church of Bruneck is a Roman Catholic sacred building in the city of Bruneck in South Tyrol . Her patronage is the Assumption of Mary . The current building dates from the 19th century.
history
The parish church of Bruneck is probably the most frequently converted and newly built sacred building in South Tyrol. A first Marienkirche can be traced back to the 13th century. A large late Gothic choir was added to the church around 1515 . In 1610 Bruneck became independent from the original parish of St. Lorenzen and became an independent parish. A baroque new building with ceiling paintings by Joseph Schöpf instead of the old church was built around 1790. After a fire, the current church was built between 1851 and 1853 according to plans by the Viennese architect Hermann Bergmann . The consecration took place in 1856.
Building description
The parish church is one of the earliest examples of historicist architecture in South Tyrol. In the exterior design, adorned by two facade towers, neo-Romanesque and classicist forms meet. The large nave ends at a detached, polygonal final choir.
The parish church is known for its Nazarene ceiling paintings, which were executed by Georg Mader . The four side altars show works by Franz Hellweger .
