Franz Hellweger (born September 7, 1812 in St. Lorenzen im Pustertal , † February 15, 1880 in Innsbruck ) was a Tyrolean painter .

Hellweger was born as the son of the wealthy businessman Josef Hellweger and Elisabeth Damm. He attended school in St. Lorenzen, then the Imperial and Royal District School in Brixen . In 1823 his father died when he was eleven years old. At the age of 15 he started his apprenticeship with the painter Andreas Winkler in Mühlen im Tauferer Tal, where he stayed for three years. The art lover Johann Vintler from Bruneck became aware of his work; he became his friend and patron.

In October 1832 Hellweger went to the academy in Munich. Hellweger was accepted into the royal academy. He first drew under Professor Clemens von Zimmermann in the Antikensaal. At the same time he attended the painting class of Professor Heinrich Maria von Hess .

In 1837 Hellweger completed his first altarpiece The Marriage of St. Catherine for the church in Aufhofen in the Puster Valley .

From 1838 to 1840 he worked for Peter von Cornelius in decorating the Ludwig Church in Munich with frescoes. In the summer of 1843 he helped create decorative jewelry for the cathedral choir in Cologne Cathedral.

In June 1851 he returned to Tyrol. From 1851 to 1862 he worked in Hall in Tirol . In 1862 he moved to Innsbruck ; in the same year he married Marie von Wenger from Hall, a daughter from an old trading house. The marriage resulted in two sons: Michael later became a priest and taught at the boys' seminary in Brixen, Ludwig became state secretary in Innsbruck.

Today, 78 identifiable paintings of Hellweger's works have survived, some of which are in ecclesiastical and some in private ownership.

Hellweger's style can be assigned to late Nazarene painting.

On February 1, 1880, Hellweger fell ill with a cold that worsened into pneumonia . He died of the consequences on February 15, 1880 in Innsbruck.
