history

History of the parish

In a document in 1147 a parish ( ecclesia Grine ) was named, which at that time was a daughter of the Altpfarre Saxen and in 1161/1162 became an abbey parish of Waldhausen Abbey . A first pastor was mentioned in a document in 1327. From 1451 the parish was subordinate to the sovereign. A former sacristan's house, a primary school and the rectory stood on the trapezoid-shaped church square; the church was surrounded by a cemetery until 1841, and the south-western access was via a steep church staircase. The parish has been the seat of a deanery since 1879.

History of the parish church

Of the oldest parish church from the 12th century, only the figuratively designed console stones on the north and south-west corners of the nave and on the edges high up on the tower have been preserved, but they were all reused in later renovations.

In 1476 the church served the units of the later governor Bernhard von Scherffenberg as a fortified church to defend against Matthias Corvinus ' troops , and the building was badly damaged. In the fourth quarter of the 15th century, the nave was rebuilt and enlarged in the late Gothic style. This created the connection of the older west tower, probably from the 14th century, to the nave.

Tombstone of Hans Jakob Löbl

The parish church is a late Gothic , but heavily renovated hall church . The three-aisled, four-bay nave hall is vaulted with cross ribs .

The portals are stylistically different. The north portal was built around 1450, the south portal around 1500 and the now walled-up west portal around 1530.

The west tower has an ogival cross-rib vaulted passage. After the city fire of 1642, its structure was redesigned. The large knight's grave in the passage of the castle owner Johann Jacob Loeble, whose nephew of the same name became Governor of Upper Austria, is provided with an additional plaque:

Anno 1560 am 21 tag May starb der Edel Ervest Herr Hans Jacob Löbl zue Greinburg Hie begraben dem Got genadt

Furnishing

The furnishings of the church are remarkable Baroque furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The high altar from 1749 shows a painting by Bartolomeo Altomonte .

The pulpit with the four church fathers was donated in 1679 by the castle lady of Greinburg .

The four tall, colored glass windows were donated in 1931/32 and bear the following inscriptions:

„ICH WAR NACKT UND IHR HABT MICH GEKLEIDET / HLG ELISABETH BITT FÜR UNS / DIE SPARKASSE GREIN 1931“
„ICH WAR HUNGRIG UND IHR HABT MICH GESPEIST / ST. ANTONIUS BITT FÜR UNS / DIE SPARKASSE GREIN 1931“
„ER WAR IHNEN UNTERTAN / BETE UND ARBEITE / 1932“
„ST. NIKOLAUS HILF IN DER NOT“ (ohne Jahresangabe)
