The parish church of Mautern an der Donau is the parish church of the Roman Catholic parish of Mautern (an der Donau) in the Lower Austrian district of Krems-Land . It is consecrated to St. Stephen and belongs to the Göttweig deanery .

history

Through the work of the late antique missionary and founder of the monastery, St. Severin von Noricum from 453 until his death in Mautern ( Fort Favianis ), Mautern was connected to Christianity at an early stage and developed into a spiritual and religious center in the final phase of the Roman era. In 893, the king of Eastern Franconia, Arnolf of Carinthia, donated the area to Kremsmünster Abbey . The first church and the parish were built between 1045 and 1065. In the 11th century, the parish was included in the endowment of the Göttweig Abbey , which Bishop Altmann founded in 1083. In 1386 it was incorporated and around 1415 it was detached from the monastery parish.

In the second half of the 14th century, the church was rebuilt, with the northern choir side chapel (death chapel) being older (end of the 14th century). In the years 1695/96 Carlo Antonio Carlone rebuilt the interior of the nave and made it Baroque . The mighty, three-storey church tower in the southern choir corner was built over the medieval core from 1774 to 1777 by the master builder Karl Ehmann.
