Petrus Canisius is a Catholic parish church in the Innsbruck district of Höttinger Au , which was built from 1968 to 1972. It is consecrated to St. Peter Canisius , the patron saint of the Diocese of Innsbruck , and is a listed building .

history

The Höttinger Au was densely built from the east from the beginning of the 20th century. From 1958 there were plans to build a new parish center in the area belonging to the Mariahilf parish. In 1960 the diocese acquired land between Santifallerstraße, Fischnalerstraße and Innpromenade and in 1966 announced a competition. Horst Parson won this award with his design for a church with a parish hall in the basement, a rectory, a student residence and a youth hostel. On October 7, 1968, the construction of the church and the rectory began. The parish vicariate of Petrus Canisius was established on October 1, 1970, and the first service was celebrated in the hall of the student dormitory, which has now been completed. In 1972 the church was consecrated , in 1975 the rectory was consecrated. In 1987 the vicariate was  raised to an independent parish by Bishop Reinhold Stecher .

description

inside view

The church is a flat-roofed, towerless central building over a square floor plan. The parish hall is located in the basement, the church room on the upper floor is reached via entrances with outside stairs at the corners. There are two low, cubic, chapel-like extensions on each side. The wall surfaces above and between the chapels consist of a steel frame and transparent fields made of glass fiber reinforced plastic. These create a strong closeness on the outside, but on the inside a uniform and bright light distribution. The impression of the room is determined by a heavy coffered ceiling . The church is oriented to the south, the altar area is delimited by three steps and pulled into the middle of the room. It is surrounded on three sides by rows of benches. The altar area is also illuminated by five glazed fields in the coffered ceiling. The wooden sculpture of St. Petrus Canisius in the chancel was created in 1983 by Siegfried Hafner .
