Location description

The church stands in the middle of the market on a hill. Due to the elevated position, it towers above all buildings.

history

The church is one of the oldest church buildings in Upper Austria. The year 1152 is in the triumphal arch. A baptistery was probably built at this time, which stood on the site of today's church. This was already consecrated to St. John the Baptist, presumably because a hospital was built next to the chapel to care for travelers. The current church was consecrated in 1310 and the church was detached from the parish of Gallneukirchen as an independent parish church. Due to disrepair, the church was partially rebuilt and renewed from 1640. The church underwent an exterior renovation in 1983.

architecture

Church exterior

The church is large and simple. Until 1881 the church had only one roof turret as a steeple. From 1881 a bell tower was built, which was built with donations from the parish. The foundation stone for the tower was laid on May 10, 1881, two years later, on June 21, 1883, the church tower cross was consecrated. The height of the tower is 50 meters.

Furnishing

The high altar is a baroque masterpiece from 1731, it was created by the cabinet maker Franz Stadler . The high altar picture shows the "Beheading of St. John the Baptist" and comes from the Altomonte school . The picture is flanked by statues of Saints Maximilian and Valentin . The two side altars date from the construction time of the high altar. You stand to the left and right of the triumphal arch. The women's altar is a donation from the Starhemberg caretaker Griesmüller from 1673. On the epistle side, in the transition from the presbytery to the nave, there is the pulpit, which was rebuilt around 1770. The two tablets of the law are attached to the sound cover. Below the center of the presbytery is a locked crypt for four marshals from the 15th century. The communion grid was made of granite . In the chancel on the right is a baroque crucifixion group. Folk altar, sessio and ambo were created in 1977 in keeping with the style.

The altar structure in the weekday chapel dates from 1983.
