The Roman Catholic parish church Unterwart stands in an elevated position on the southern outskirts of the community Unterwart in the district of Oberwart in Burgenland . It is consecrated to Saint Catherine and is in the Pinkafeld dean's office . The church is a listed building .
history
The church may already date from pre-Reformation times. In 1797 the church was spun off from the Oberwart parish and in 1804 elevated to an independent parish. In 1976 the exterior was restored.
Church building
The church is a small building with a long nave and a semicircular apse . In the east there is a tower with a pyramid helmet . Above the western part of the nave, built in 1767, is a barrel vault with stitch caps . In 1869 the building was expanded to include two square vaulted bays and the apse. On the north side of the choir is the small old sacristy, in the south a younger two-storey sacristy extension with a square vaulted oratory on the first floor.
Furnishing
The high altar was built in 1869 in neo-baroque forms. Figures of the holy kings Stephan and Emmerich stand between two pairs of columns . The altarpiece shows Saint Catherine. The side altar is a simple Rococo altar from around 1770. The tabernacle was created in 1869, the image of the erection of the cross around 1900.
The pulpit was created around 1770 - seated figures of the four evangelists are depicted on the basket, possibly a work by Nikolaus Minich . The sound cover is decorated with a trumpet angel from 1870.
