As art in public space , the fountain installed in 1979 with its two horse heads in the form of chess pieces is a reminder of historical times: Before the expansion of the Hanover city railway , the use of bicycles and the mass use of automobiles, horses were primarily used to move quickly and to transport heavy loads . In particular from the beginning of industrialization, public fountains were set up as drinking troughs in many places in the city to supply the horses with water . For example, a postcard from around 1900 shows a historical drinking trough on the corner of the Kötnerholzweg which is diagonally opposite the current fountain . The horse-drawn carriage fountain is also reminiscent of the site's former post office .

Behind the horses' heads of the fountain, a steel carriage is suggested that covers a bench. This allows the work of art to serve those waiting at the bus stop .
