The Phare du Four du Croisic is a lighthouse ( French Phare ) in the Bay of Biscay . It denotes the tidal island Plateau du Four when approaching the Loire .
description
At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte established the system of navigation marks in France. Two navigation marks were then built for the approach to the Loire estuary. In the north, the Le Four lighthouse was built in 1819 as the first French lighthouse in the open sea. In 1822 the fire was lit in the tower, as the first fire on this stretch of coast. In the south it was soon supplemented by a Phare du Pilier , built between 1827 and 1828 .
The Le Four lighthouse stands on the tidal island of Plateau du Four , about 3.6 nautical miles (6.6 kilometers) west of the coast of Le Croisic . The initially 17 m high tower was raised by 6 m in 1846 and now has a fire height of 23 m. The tower stands out due to its striking painting with wide diagonal black and white stripes.
Vegetable oil was initially used for the fire, mineral oil was used from 1875 and oil vapor from 1904. On October 12, 1983 the lighthouse was switched to automatic operation. The identifier consists of a white flash with a return of 5 seconds (Fl.W.5s). The range is 18 nautical miles (approx. 33 kilometers).
The lighthouse is recognized as an architectural heritage in France ( establishment de signalisation maritime No. 845/000, for example: maritime signaling device).
