Phare du Pilier is the name of a lighthouse on the island of the same name , the Île du Pilier , which belongs to the municipality of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île and belongs to the Vendée department . The tower, located at the mouth of the Loire River and built in 1876, has been automated since 1996 and is no longer inhabited.

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte established the system of navigation marks in France. Two navigation marks were then built for the approach to the Loire estuary. In the north, the Le Four lighthouse was built in 1819 as the first French lighthouse in the open sea. The Phare du Pilier was built to the south of its position .

First tower

  • Construction of the first cylindrical tower on a square base. The tower has a height of 29.5 m (32.5 m above zero ) and was equipped with a fixed white light.
  • Extension and renovation of the tower in connection with the construction of accommodation for the lighthouse keepers .
  • In 1870 the firing was switched to petroleum. However, the heat development was so great that a new tower had to be built

Second tower

  • 1872 Commissioning of the second, pyramid-shaped tower with a height of 30.2 m.
  • 1903 Installation of a white flashing light, which flares up every 20 seconds in groups of three
  • Installation of a fog horn in 1910
  • In 1934 this was replaced by a more powerful variant
  • On August 13, 1945, it was restarted after the Second World War , and the Nebelhorn went back online in 1946
  • In 1966, wind turbines were installed on both towers . Its range is 19 nautical miles .

Current lighthouse

  • The red painted lighting system was automated in 1996 and is controlled from St. Nazaire .
  • On the back of the tower there is a continuously flashing red light at a height of 7 m.
  • The Phares des Pilier lighthouses are now recognized as an architectural heritage in France ( establishment de signalisation maritime No. 845/000, for example: maritime signaling device).
