The Pharos Lighthouse is a lighthouse in Fleetwood , Lancashire , England . The lighthouse, which is also known as the Upper Light , together with the Beach Lighthouse and the Wyre Light , signals the entrance to the port of Fleetwood through the estuary of the River Wyre, which is marked by sandbanks . The lighthouse is located in the middle of a residential area on Pharos Street , which earned it its name based on the Pharos lighthouse in Alexandria.
The 29 m high lighthouse was designed by Decimus Burton and Captain Henry Mangles Denham in 1839 and built from sandstone. The tower was put into operation on December 1, 1840 .
The lighthouse emits a green light that is visible 13 miles away and that, when placed directly above the Beach Lighthouse light, indicates the Wyre Light, which is 2.3 miles offshore on North Wharf Bank marked the Wyre canal.
The lighthouse is a monument listed by English Heritage as a Grade II Monument .
