The Phenomenal Handclap Band is a music collective from Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan , New York City , who can be assigned to the genres of rock , disco , soul , electro-pop and psychedelia .

history

The band has existed since 2008 and was founded by the two DJs Daniel Collás and Sean Marquand, who were well acquainted with the local music scene through their work with TV on the Radio and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, among others . After a while, both began to write their own songs before the other members joined the band in the year it was founded, expanding it to a width of eight members.

The first album, which bears the same name as the band itself, was released on October 16, 2009 and was released in Germany on Gomma Records. In the US it was released by Friendly Fire Recordings and Tummy Touch Records. The album was released in Japan by KSR Records, in Australia by Inertia and in the Philippines by Universal Records . In December of the following year, the second album Remixes was released , which only contains remixes of the songs from the first album.

On February 17, 2012, the band's third album, Form & Control , was released. In the same year the band goes on a European tour and plays in London , Basel and Berlin , among others .

reception

The band was positively received and rated by the trade press and various music magazines, especially after the first album was released. The first album itself received a rating of 6.2 at Pitchfork and other sites also rated it positively. Among other things, the website "Plattentests.de" wrote:

“The groove just sticks, the melodies gently slide into the ear and rumble happily to themselves. The Phenomenal Handclap Band confidently pushes itself past any intellectual criticism by simply mowing them with a coolness and sex that makes your chest hair sprout. "

The short description of the third album on Amazon.de indicates that the band fits perfectly into the gap between Sly & The Family Stone , Tom Tom Club , CSS and The Go! Team inserts.
