Phil Broadhurst

Philip Douglas Broadhurst (born June 26, 1949 - April 24, 2020 ) was a New Zealand jazz musician ( piano , composition ) and radio presenter who is counted among the most important jazz musicians in his country.

Broadhurst studied at Massey University , where he completed his master's thesis Against All Odds - the life and music of Michel Petrucciani in 2008 .

Broadhurst played regularly in Auckland, particularly at The London Bar . In the 1980s and 1990s he organized the Winter Jazz Series annually at the Auckland Art Gallery , in which he also performed himself. He also played with his own group in Paris and London and gave several concerts at the Australian Magnetic Island Jazz Festival . He had other festival appearances at the Wellington International Jazz Festival with John Bell's Immaculate Trio , at the Tauranga Jazz Festival with the Jazz Divas and Mojave , at the Queenstown Jazz Festival with Rodger Fox ' All-Stars and at the Nelson Jazz Festival with the Jazz Diva s and Frank Gibson's Rainbow Bridge . He also accompanied the likes of Johnny Griffin , Ronnie Scott and Scott Hamilton .

Broadhurst was also a noted broadcaster who presented the Art of Jazz program on Radio New Zealand for more than 20 years .

Between 2000 and 2016 led Broadhurst jazz program at the New Zealand School of Music of Massey University .

Prizes and awards

Broadhurst was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001 for services to jazz music. At the 2016 NZ Music Awards , Broadhurst received the Jazz Tui for his album Panacea . He also won the Jazz Record of the Year award three times .
