Phil Klay
Phil Klay (born 1983 in White Plains, NY ) is an American writer and former soldier in the US Marine Corps . His story collection Redeployment received praise from the American press, was translated into ten languages, was on the New York Times bestseller list and received the National Book Award 2014 in the fiction category and the WY Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction 2015.
Life
Phil Klay studied creative writing and history at Dartmouth College . From 2005 to 2009 he served in the US Marine Corps and from January 2007 to February 2008 he served abroad as a public affairs officer in the Iraqi province of Al-Anbar.
After his military service, he enrolled for a Master of Fine Arts degree at Hunter College in New York and attended the Veterans Writing Workshop at New York University . In 2011 he finished his studies. His short story “ Redeployment ” was published in the same year in the literary magazine Granta as the lead in the 9/11 issue of Ten Years Later . His literary debut, a collection of short stories about experiences in the Iraq war , was published under the same name in spring 2014 .
Phil Klay has published articles in journals and magazines, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal .
Klay lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife Jessica Alvarez .
reception
Some reviewers see Klay as an outstanding new voice in American literature. Because of its complexity and literary quality, We Shot Dogs is a timeless classic. Klay has been compared to authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad, Tim O'Brien, and Erich Maria Remarque.
