history

The Vienna Philharmonic Ball has been held 78 times to date (as of 2019). The first ball took place on March 4, 1924 - on this occasion Richard Strauss composed his own fanfare , which is played every year as part of the opening. Today the ball always takes place on the penultimate Thursday in January.

In 1991 the ball, like the Opera Ball, was canceled due to the Gulf War . The ball is held in the halls of the Vienna Music Association . At the ball there are 3,600 people in the music association, of which around 2,800 are ball guests and around 800 are participants.

From 1949 to 2010 there was the honorary function of the ball president, in 2011 this was replaced by a ball committee. In the summer of 2007, Andreas Großbauer was elected as head of the ball by the plenum of the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2014/15 he was followed by tuba player Paul Halwax as organizer of the Philharmonic Ball. Since 2017 it has been mandatory for men to wear tails at the Philharmonic Ball - just like at the Opera Ball .
