Philip Green (composer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philip "Phil" Green (born July 19, 1911 in London-Whitechapel , United Kingdom ; † October 6, 1982 in Dublin , Ireland ) was a British pianist , composer and film composer .

Life

Phil Green began taking piano lessons from the age of seven and, given his great talent, was awarded a scholarship from the famous Trinity College of Music in his hometown of London at the age of 13 . At 19, he was already engaged as a conductor at the Prince of Wales Theater in London's Leicester Square. A little later, the record company EMI hired him as their musical director. In this role, Green also worked for the BBC broadcaster . As a pianist, Green took part in numerous recordings of music programs, which were also pressed onto records. Cooperations brought him together with Teddy Foster, Henry Jacques, The New Mayfair Dance Orchestra, Harry Roy and Jack Simpson, among others. Phil Green worked for Decca Records as their house arranger and conductor.

Although Phil Green had made his first contacts with film during the Second World War , he only decided to change his profession immediately after the end of the war. Green wrote his first compositions without naming them, from 1948 he was given names. In just twenty years of work, Phil Green set almost a hundred films to music, most of which he also worked as his own arranger and conductor. The majority of these productions were "simple mass dispersion without too great artistic demands". In the 1960s, he also set crime series to British television. For a time Philip Green was also the musical director of the Rank Organization . After finishing his film work, he and his wife Dorothy moved to Ireland. There Philip Green concentrated on composing religious pieces of music.
