Philipp Bartholomé Rüfer

Philipp Bartholomé Rüfer (born June 7, 1844 in Liège in Belgium , † September 17, 1919 in Berlin ) was a German composer .

Life

Rüfer, the son of a German organist , studied a. a. Composition with Étienne Soubre at the Liège Conservatory and Moritz Hauptmann at the Leipzig Conservatory . From 1871 he worked in Berlin , where he first taught piano and score playing at the conservatory of Julius Stern and then at the later Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory - there he taught as a professor from 1881. He was considered an influential teacher, and his students included Charles Tomlinson Griffes , Georgi Catoire , Heinz Tiessen , Otto Besch , Fritz Schedler and Hans Schindler .

In addition to a symphony , a violin concerto, overtures , several chamber music works, piano pieces and songs, he wrote a. a. the two operas Merlin (1887) based on a drama by Karl Immermann and Ingo (1896) based on a novel by Gustav Freytag . Rüfer had a strong influence on Richard Wagner's musical drama .
