Philipp Christian Bunsen (born October 1, 1729 in Arolsen ; † February 10, 1790 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a mint master in Arolsen and Frankfurt .

Life

Jeremias Bunsen's son studied mining in Clausthal . After his father's death, Prince Karl August Friedrich zu Waldeck-Pyrmont appointed him to succeed him as mint master in Arolsen. In 1755, Bunsen initiated the purchase of a balancing embossing machine (see coinage ). He tried to remedy the inadequate supply of precious metals through explorations in the Kellerwald am Silberberg near Hundsdorf and in mines near Berg Freiheit. But the silver content of the obtained working lead with 5 to 6 solder per hundredweight of lead remained unsatisfactory.

In 1754 he married the pastor's daughter Christine Elisabeth Linden (1727-1807) from Heimburg near Blankenburg am Harz, with whom he had nine children. Among them were three sons who each founded a branch of the now branching family: Philipp Ludwig Bunsen (1760–1809) was the founder of the Arolser branch, Johann Georg (1766–1833; father of Gustav ) that of the Frankfurt and Christian Bunsen (1 April 1770 - March 24, 1837; father of Robert ) that of the Göttingen branch.

He also held the post of postmaster. After the prince's death, in 1764 he switched to the service of the Free Imperial City of Frankfurt as a mint master, where he made an outstanding contribution to measurement in 1787. In 1789 he took his third son, Johann Georg, as an assistant at the Frankfurt Mint.

progeny

In 1790 his son Johann Georg Bunsen was appointed his successor by the Frankfurt Senate. In the following year he married Charlotte Augusta Christiana Huth (1766-1847), who from 1807 ran a girls' school in Frankfurt. Her oldest son, Georg Karl Bunsen (1794–1872) studied philosophy in Berlin from October 1812 and from 1820 headed an educational institute in Frankfurt, where Ferdinand Lindheimer later taught. After his younger brothers Adolf and Gustav had made themselves unpopular by storming the Hauptwache in 1833 , Georg Karl accompanied them to the USA, where he founded a school in Belleville (Illinois) in 1834 .
