from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philipp Ernst of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg ( May 5, 1673 - November 12, 1729 ) was an officer in the Danish service and from 1698 to 1729 Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg .

Life

Philipp Ernst was the oldest surviving son of Christian von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg from his second marriage to Agnes Hedwig of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (1640–1698). After a cavalier journey , he joined the Danish military service as an officer in 1692. He was one of the Danish troops who fought in Flanders from 1692 to 1695 under English command .

In 1698 he followed his father as Duke in Glücksburg, but remained in the Danish service, often stayed at the court of King Friedrich IV in Copenhagen and was also the bearer of the Elephant Order . In 1701 he placed his dragoon regiment in Danish service as lieutenant general . During the Northern War in 1710 he again led a unit in Flanders made available to England. Despite the good relationship with the king, he never received an official enfeoffment with his duchy. Instead, in 1721, he had to pay homage to the king like a nobleman .

He managed to increase his country through the acquisition of certain goods and to increase his income by the forced labor of the peasants in some goods through lease payments replaced. Overall, however, he retained serfdom .

family

Philipp Ernst was married three times. His first wife Christine von Sachsen-Eisenberg (* March 4, 1679, † May 24, 1722) he married in 1699. She was the only daughter of Christian von Sachsen-Eisenberg . From this marriage came his successor Friedrich , as well as two other sons and four daughters. After Christine's death, he married Catharina Christina Ahlefeld (1687–1726) that same year . The widowed chief stewardess in Copenhagen came from the Schleswig-Holstein nobility and was thus in rank below them. However, the king made her princess of Holstein, with which she was equal to Philipp Ernst. She died in 1726 after a stillbirth. The only son in this marriage died as an infant. After her death, Philipp Ernst entered into a third marriage with Charlotte Amalie Marie (1697–1760), the daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg . She had previously been a canon at Herford Abbey . There are no children from this marriage.
