Christian (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christian von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (born June 19, 1627 - † November 17, 1698 ) was Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg from 1662 to 1698 .

Life

Christian was the only surviving son of Philipp , the founder of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg line, and Sophie Hedwig of Saxony-Lauenburg (1601–1660), the daughter of Duke Franz II of Saxony-Lauenburg . When his father died, he inherited all of his property. Due to the dispute with the Gottorf Duke Christian Albrecht with Denmark, however, there was no enfeoffment from the Danish kings Friedrich III. and Christian V. instead. Instead, the kings demanded taxes on the property of the separated lords . Thanks to the intervention of his brother-in-law Rudolf August von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Christian was able to avert the complete financial ruin that he met with the Dukes of Sønderborg and Norburg . As a skilled administrator, Christian was able to keep his property together despite the tax burden.

Christian introduced compulsory schooling in his six parishes in 1664/1674 , built schools in Glücksburg and Munkbrarup, and in 1682 issued his own church service regulations.

With Sibylle Ursula von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , daughter of Duke August II , he married a very well educated woman in 1663, one year after he took up his inheritance. However, she became seriously ill as early as 1664 and died in 1671 in stillbirth. None of the four children from this marriage were older than two months. From Christian's second marriage with his cousin Agnes Hedwig von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön (1640–1698) three (of seven) children survived, including his successor Philipp Ernst .
