from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philip of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (born March 15, 1584 , † September 27, 1663 ) was the first Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg since 1622 .

He was the son of Duke Johann von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg and Elisabeth von Braunschweig-Grubenhagen . In his will, Johann divided his divided duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg among five of his six surviving sons. Philip was the youngest to receive the smallest partial duchy and the Glücksburg Castle, which was built in 1587 . He nearly doubled his holdings and went to great lengths to increase its income. Politically he remained insignificant, but he managed to arrange politically advantageous marriages for his daughters.
