Philipp Hangen (born March 26, 1836 in Worms , † August 10, 1915 in Darmstadt ) was a German philologist, professor of English and French and librarian .

Life

He spent his childhood and school days in his hometown. After graduating from high school, he studied Classical Philology at the University of Giessen , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. He was then a candidate for teaching at a grammar school in Worms. In 1859 he came to Darmstadt and became a teacher at the Eysenbach Institute. Two years later he moved to Trinity College Glenalmond in Scotland, where he taught German and French. From 1870 to 1873 he was a public examiner in England. In November 1875 he returned to Darmstadt and got a job as a teacher at the Realgymnasium on Kapellplatz. Two years later he became a teacher at the secondary school in Darmstadt and at the same time a teacher of English at the TH Darmstadt . Shortly after his marriage in 1878, he opened a private boarding school for young Englishmen; A study visit to Darmstadt was very popular with young English at the time, because of the close family ties between the Hessian grand ducal house and the English royal family ( Alice , Queen Victoria's second daughter, was married to the Hessian Grand Duke Ludwig IV ). In 1893 he was awarded the title of professor. In October 1894 he received a full professorship for modern languages, English and French at the TH Darmstadt.

After Otto Roquette's death in 1895, Philipp Hangen headed the university library of the TH Darmstadt, which had existed since 1872 . Like his predecessors, he held this office on a part-time basis from 1896 to 1901. Since the inauguration of the main building of the TH Darmstadt in 1895, the university library has been in two larger rooms on the ground floor at the end of the corridor towards the foyer. Since November 1894, Hangen was also a sworn translator and interpreter.

Philipp Hangen died three years after his retirement in August 1915 at the age of 79. He was married to Helene von Bechthold (born November 4, 1852) since August 3, 1878. The marriage resulted in only one daughter, Maria Ottilie ("Tilla") Hangen, who later became Viktor Blaess ' wife .
