Philipp Sandner (born February 23, 1980 in Heidelberg ) is a German economist and professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management .

Life and offices

Sandner was born in Heidelberg. After graduating from high school in 1999, he completed his community service and studied business administration with a specialization in business informatics at the University of Mannheim and the Copenhagen Business School from 2000 to 2005 . From 2005 to 2009 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Innovation Research, Technology Management and Entrepreneurship at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich under the direction of Dietmar Harhoff and obtained his doctorate in 2009 as a Dr.oec.publ. on the subject of "The Valuation of Intangible Assets" at the Munich School of Management of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. There he also completed the Master of Business Research (MBR). In 2008, he spent a research stay at the Berkeley Center for Law, Technology at the University of California at Berkeley . From 2010 to 2012 he worked as a postdoc and research assistant at the chair for strategy and organization with Isabell Welpe at the Technical University of Munich .

From 2010 to 2015 Sandner was co-founder and partner of the Munich Innovation Group, a management consultancy specializing in innovation strategy and technology transfer. In 2015 he became a professor at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. In February 2017, the Blockchain Center was founded at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, which Sandner took over from now on. The center analyzes u. a. Implications of blockchain technology for companies and business and sees itself as a platform for knowledge exchange for decision-makers, startups, technology and industry experts.

Sandner has been appointed to the FinTech Council of the Federal Ministry of Finance and the working group of the EU Blockchain Observatory of the European Union since 2017 due to his expertise . The “National Risk Analysis” working group set up by the Federal Ministry of Finance also asked Sandner about cryptocurrencies.

The German business magazine Capital lists Sandner in the “ Top 40 under 40” category . According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, he is also one of the 30 most influential economists in Germany in 2018 and 2019.

Research and teaching focus

Sandner researches in particular on the topics of blockchain technology, crypto assets, distributed ledger technology (DLT) , digital programmable euros and security tokens (STOs) . Furthermore he occupied himself a. a. with corporate entrepreneurship , Digital transformation (for example, by Fintech -Startups), Strategic Innovation, financing of start-ups (such as by strategic investors, business angels, venture capital) and intellectual property rights.

He has received multiple grants and Best Paper Awards. His research has been published in international journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly , Research Policy, the Journal of Marketing Research or the Journal of Business Venturing. Subject areas in teaching are digitization, entrepreneurship, innovation management and intellectual property rights.

Sandner sees the general development of blockchain technologies as a long-term disruptive innovation that will change the financial sector in particular. In an interview with ARD , for example, he said that " To put it bluntly, the STOs ( Security Token Offerings) will significantly change Deutsche Börse's business model in a few years. "

Philipp Sandner also points out that blockchain technologies as a distributed database of transactions are still at the beginning of their development (as of August 2018). In addition, current blockchain solutions would all still be in an experimental environment.
