Philipp Sauerland (* 1677 in Danzig , Polish Prussia , † around 1760 in Breslau , Province of Silesia , Kingdom of Prussia ) was a German painter in Danzig and Breslau.

Life

The painter Lorentz Sawerlender (or Sauerlander ) was probably his grandfather. He came from Hohenkirchen in Thuringia and was named in 1643 as a member of the Danzig painters' guild . The painter Philip Surlandt , who presented his journeyman's piece in Danzig in 1675, was probably his father.

The young Philipp Sauerland probably soon went on a wandering journey, as no journeyman or master craftsman's work in Gdansk is known. In 1709 he was in Berlin. In 1712 and 1714 he made works in Danzig.

Around 1716 Sauerland went to Breslau in what was then Austrian Silesia. From 1721 is a handwritten signature as a keyser. Court Mahler known in Breßlau . He probably also worked in Vienna for some time .

In 1758 Philipp Sauerland made his will, in 1762 it was carried out.

Create

Philipp Sauerland mainly painted still lifes and portraits. His painting style is influenced by the Dutch Baroque style, which was otherwise not very common in Gdansk. The artistic value of his paintings must be assessed as limited, nevertheless they achieve six-figure prices at auctions.
