Philipp Schmitz (painter)

Philipp Schmitz , nicknamed Kirmesschmitz (* 1824 in Düsseldorf ; † May 1887 there ), was a German portrait and genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Schmitz studied from 1841 to 1846 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . There was Karl Ferdinand Sohn his teacher. In 1848 he was one of the founders of the Düsseldorf artists' association Malkasten . He claimed to be the inventor of the club name. Schmitz was regarded by his contemporaries as a good-natured character with a cheerful disposition and romantic cosiness. He gained a certain popularity as a portrait painter of the Düsseldorf bourgeoisie and in the Bergisches Land , where he painted merchants and manufacturers. Seascapes, which he based on Andreas Achenbach's design, earned the painter, who often stayed in Solingen , the nickname “Solinger Achenbach”.

Schmitz 'sister Antonetta Josepha married Friedrich Arnz (* 1826) in 1851, the brother of the painters Albert and Otto Arnz .
