Philippe Bas (born July 5, 1953 in Paris ; † December 9, 2011 in Paris ) was a French stride and jazz pianist .

Life

Bas, born in Paris in 1953, received a classical education between 1963 and 1973, then turned to jazz , especially to the music of Fats Waller and James P. Johnson . From 1975 he worked in various jazz formations, a. a. he accompanied Bill Coleman . In 1986 he played in the orchestra of Olivier Franc , with whom he appeared at numerous festivals in France, Germany and Sweden. As a soloist and band player, he has given concerts in Parisian clubs such as the Slow Club, Le Caveau de la Huchette , Latitudes Saint Germain and Le Méridien . In 1990 he presented his debut album Swing Rag and Blues ; In 1996 he became a member of the band The Feetwarmers of drummer Daniel Bechet, son of Sidney Bechet . In 1997 he recorded a solo album with his own compositions for EMI Music France, as well as an album with saxophonist Philippe Audibert ( Hey There ). In the late 2000s he played in a duo with Olivier Lancelot , and he also appeared as a street musician in Paris.
