Philippe Jacques van Bree (born January 13, 1786 in Antwerp , † February 16, 1871 in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node near Brussels ) was a Belgian painter .

Bree received his first artistic lessons from his older brother Mathieu . Later he was able to attend the art academy in his hometown together with his brother . a. Student of Petrus Johan van Regemorter . The two brothers later lived and worked in Paris and were students in François-André Vincent's studio .

While his brother Mathieu went back to Antwerp in 1804, Philippe went on an extensive study trip to and through Italy. For several years Bree lived and worked in Pavia as a freelance artist.

In 1818 Bree returned to France and settled in Paris. He later went to Brussels , where he was employed as a staff member in the Royal Museum. Rumor has it that he was a protége of Gustave Wappers , who is said to have stood up for him with King Leopold I.

Philippe Jacques van Bree died on February 16, 1871 in Brussels at the age of around 85.

His small-scale paintings of historical content are dull and sweet in color and have superficial characteristics.
