Mathieu Ignace van Brée
Mathieu Ignace van Brée (born February 22, 1773 in Antwerp , † December 15, 1839 there ) was a Belgian painter , sculptor and architect .
Life
Together with his younger brother Philippe , Brée attended the art academy in his hometown and was there a. a. Student of Petrus Johan van Regemorter . They later lived and worked in Paris , where they were also pupils of the painter François-André Vincent .
On the occasion of the annual exhibition of the Paris Salon in 1797 , Brées painting Death of Cato was awarded the Prix de Rome , 2nd class, by the Académie française . While his brother Philippe set off on an extensive study trip to Italy, Brée returned to Antwerp in 1804. There he settled as a freelance painter, but was not really successful with the public.
In 1820 Brée was appointed lecturer at the art academy and about seven years later he was entrusted with the management of the academy; he held this office until the end of his life. His former student Gustave Wappers was appointed as his successor in 1840 .
As director of the academy, he endeavored to reform the training of artists and over the years was able to record many students. In addition to Adrien de Braekeleer , Nicaise de Keyser and Gustave Wappers, Antoine Joseph Wiertz and Jules van Ysendyck should also be mentioned here.
