Phillip Smith

Phillip Hagar Smith (born April 29, 1905 in Lexington , Massachusetts , † August 29, 1987 in Berkeley Heights , New Jersey ) was an American engineer . He became known with the invention of the Smith chart named after him , a system for the graphical representation of calculations in the complex alternating current bill .

After graduating from Tufts College in 1928, Smith worked for Radio Corporation of America (RCA) on antennas and radio frequency lines. For these applications he invented the Smith chart in 1937. During World War II he worked on radar systems. He later moved to Bell Laboratories , where he worked until his retirement in 1970.

Smith had been a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) or Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1947 , which made him a Fellow in 1956 .
