Philodromus cespitum is a species of spider from the family of running spiders (Philodromidae). The species is widespread and common in Central Europe.

description

The species is one of the larger native walking spiders, females reach a body length of 4 to 7 mm, males are 3.5–5 mm long. The coloration is very variable in both sexes. Females are brown or yellowish brown, the front body ( prosoma ) shows a broad, light central band on top. The back of the body ( opisthosoma ) also shows a light central band on the upper side and often a dark heart spot and dark angular spots. The legs are yellowish gray or brown and mottled dark. Males are often more strongly marked and occasionally plain dark brown.

In Central Europe there are a number of very similar species of the genus; a reliable determination is therefore only possible through a macroscopic examination of the genital organs (genital morphological).

distribution and habitat

The large distribution area of Philodromus cespitum includes the Holarctic . In the Palearctic, the area extends from Ireland and Spain to the east of Siberia , in a north-south direction from Scandinavia to Cyprus and further east to southeast China . The species is only absent in Europe on Iceland . In the Nearctic , the species inhabits large parts of North America from Alaska to the southern border of the USA . The distribution area includes the boreal to Mediterranean zone. The species is widespread in Germany.

The species mainly lives in sunny areas that are not too humid deciduous and coniferous forests and can be found there on trunks, in the treetops or on bushes. Sexually mature animals can be found from May to August.

Danger

The species is widespread and common in suitable habitats. In Germany it is classified as "safe" in the Red List .
