Phoenix hall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Phoenix Hall was the venue for the home games of the Phoenix Hagen basketball club for the 2009/2010 season .

history

Originally the building was an industrial hall complex in the Hohenlimburg district of Hagen . Part of the building complex is still used for metalworking purposes, but most of it has been used as a fitness center for several years.

Until the 2008/09 season, the Ischelandhalle was the venue for the Phoenix Hagen home games. After the athletic promotion to the first Bundesliga in 2009, a move was necessary due to the insufficient capacity of the hall (1,800 spectators), as the BBL requires a hall capacity of at least 3,000. The association had received the license in May 2009 with a condition subsequent; without a suitable hall this would have been withdrawn again.

It was planned to restore the hall to its original state after the basketball season had ended. However, it was later rented out again; today it is a paintball arena.

modification

In April 2009, Phoenix Hagen rented one of the halls that had previously been used as the badminton and tennis hall of the fitness center. Thanks to the commitment of many, primarily voluntary, helpers, this hall was converted from April to September 2009 into a pure basketball hall. Since then this has been called the "Phoenix Hall" and serves not only as a game but also as a training facility for the club. The home games of the NBBL , JBBL and women's team Phoenix Ladies are also played here if possible. An adjoining, previously vacant hall was also rented and is now used as a business club. Here players, sponsors, guests of honor and helpers are catered for during the games. During the renovation, care was taken to preserve as much of the industrial charm of the old brick buildings as possible.

In advance

The option to use this hall as a basketball hall came about shortly before Phoenix Hagen was promoted to the BEKO BBL . Various other possible solutions had been examined in advance; Among other things, a tent of the Flic-Flac circus was to be set up temporarily in the Ischelandstadion, right next to the hall, and grandstands and playing area were to be set up there. However, this failed due to financial and technical feasibility, the stadium's lawn drainage would have been damaged by the construction of the tent.

On April 11, 2009, the evening before Phoenix Hagen's last game of the season in the current ProA season against the Bremen Roosters (111: 69), the hall was measured and virtually rebuilt. The resulting presentation was on April 14th. presented to the sponsors of the association and a little later also to the BBL commission, who granted their approval a few days later with reservations. The condition was that the planning had to be carried out by July 31, 2009 - the parquet floor had to be in place, the baskets had to hang, the grandstands had to be ready for use. This actually succeeded a few hours before the approval by the BBL commission, with which the club received the license for the 1st Bundesliga (BEKO BBL).

Data

The parquet floor was purchased by Schwelmer Baskets in June 2009 ; the grandstands were built by a Hanover company. These hold a total of 3,013 spectators. The main problem here was to install the spectator stands in such a way that sufficient escape and rescue routes remained free. Among other things, this required the installation of an escape tunnel, which actually leads through the metalworking company.

Another problem arose from the fact that a large part of the season takes place in winter and the hall was difficult to heat. Inside the team it was called "Icebox". In some games, the minimum temperature required by the BBL rules was only reached shortly before the start of the game.

The hall measures 32 × 68 m with a clear height under the gable roof of approx. 11.40 m. The front wall to the west runs at an angle, so that the southern longitudinal wall measures 72 and the northern wall 65 m.

2009/10 season

On October 11, 2009, Bundesliga basketball was played in the hall for the first time. Phoenix Hagen lost against the Paderborn Baskets (since April 2010 webmoebel Baskets) with 79:85.

The first home win in the new hall was achieved on October 18, 2009: Phoenix beat ratiopharm Ulm with 76:75.

The highest home win came on April 17, 2010 against EnBW Ludwigsburg with 96:71.

A total of 17 home games were played during the season, six games were won and a total of 1,262 points (average 74.23) were achieved. The total hall capacity of 3,013 spectators was reached three times: at the home games against ALBA Berlin , Giants Düsseldorf and EnBW Ludwigsburg , the hall was sold out; an average of 2,596 spectators visited the hall.

The history of the function as a basketball hall ended on April 17, 2010: The club played and won its last home game against EnBW Ludwigsburg (96:71), with captain Matthias Grothe playing his last home game in the blue and yellow of Hagen and after the game big ceremony was passed. Among other things, he received the promise that his shirt number "9" will not be reassigned at Phoenix Hagen.

Trivia

The documentary " Phoenix in the Ashes ", directed by Jens Pfeiffer, has the subtitle "A year in the battle for relegation". Here the team and environment of Phoenix Hagen are discussed in the same season that was held in the Phoenix Hall. In addition to internal disputes between the guards Chase Griffin and Michael-Hakim Jordan and the sporting difficulties in the fight for relegation, the film also shows scenes of the hall renovation and the associated organizational and structural problems.
