Phulbani (also Phulabani ) is the capital of the Kandhamal district in the west of the Indian state of Odisha .
Phulbani lies at an altitude of 489 m in the mountains of the Eastern Ghats . Located on the Salunki River , the city is 170 km west of Bhubaneshwar , the capital of Odisha. The national trunk road NH 157 and the Odisha trunk road 1 run through Phulbani.
As a city, Phulbani has the status of a municipality . The city is divided into 13 wards . In the 2011 census, the population was 37,371.
Before the division of the Phulbani district on January 1, 1994 into Kandhamal and Boudh , the city of Phulbani was the capital of the district of the same name.
9 km north of Phulbani is the beautiful Putudi waterfall .
