Physical Review is one of the oldest and most respected journals in physics . The journal was founded by EL Nichols in1893and has been published by the American Physical Society (the professional association of physicists in the USA)since 1913, now in collaboration with the umbrella organization American Institute of Physics .
As the magazine became more and more extensive, a “Letters” journal was split off in 1958, and then in 1970 the main journal was divided into sections (A – D).
The journal family, particularly Physical Review Letters , is considered one of the most respected journals for physics only. Only articles of very high quality will be accepted through the peer review process. In many areas of physics, a publication in PRL comes in the same rank as Science and Nature .
Today appear weekly or monthly:
- Physical Review A : Atomic , molecular - and optical physics, from 1970, ISSN 1050-2947 .
- Physical Review B : Solid State Physics , Materials Science , from 1970, ISSN 1098-0121 .
- Physical Review C : Nuclear Physics , from 1970, ISSN 0556-2813 .
- Physical Review D : high energy physics , field theory , gravitation , cosmology , from 1970, ISSN 1550-7998 .
- Physical Review E : Statistical Physics , Nonlinear Systems, Soft Matter Physics , from 1993, ISSN 1539-3755 .
- Physical Review Letters (Phys. Rev. Lett. Or informally PRL): all areas of physics; only results are published that are also of interest to physicists outside the respective field; only short articles allowed. PRL is one of the most respected journals for physics. From 1958. ISSN 0031-9007 .
- Reviews of Modern Physics : Review articles, i.e. longer essays that summarize and prepare the state of knowledge in a field of physics. From 1929. ISSN 0034-6861 .
- Physical Review Special Topics - Accelerators and Beams (Phys. Rev. AB), Particle Accelerators and Particle Beams , from 1998, ISSN 2469-9888 (Web).

- Physics , from 2008, open access online journal, highlights from the Physical Review family.
- Physical Review Research , since 2019, Open Access.
Not a magazine in the strict sense of the word, but it belongs
- Physical Review Focus : a web news service that reports on current research results in physics in a form that is understandable for non-specialists with previous physical education (since 1998).
All articles since it was founded in 1893 are available in electronic form in the Physical Review Online Archive , which, however, is reserved for subscribers - typically university libraries. Summaries of the individual articles can be viewed free of charge. Since November 2006, as part of the “Free to Read” program, authors (or other interested parties) have been able to make an article available online for everyone free of charge and permanently by paying a fee.
