Pi Chun-deuk (born May 29, 1910 in Seoul , † May 25, 2007 ) is a South Korean poet and essayist .

Life

Pi Chun-deuk, also known as Kǔma / Geuma ( 금아 ), was born on May 29, 1910 in Seoul . He graduated from Shanghai University with a degree in English literature in 1937 . After graduation, he returned to Korea and began teaching English poetry at the Imperial University of Keijō , later Seoul National University .

In 1930 his poem Short lyric piece ( 서정 소곡 ) was published in the Sindonga newspaper . Small piece ( 소곡 ) followed in 1931 and Mein Liebster is gone (가신 님) in 1932 . Pi Chun-deuks Posie is characterized by the fact that it excludes all thoughts and ideas and merely extols the beauty of pure emotion. In addition to poems, he also published essays in which he stylistically depicts the feelings of everyday life in such a way that the essays can be read like prose poems. Therefore his essays are among the representative works of the lyrical essay. The essay Karma ( 인연 ) is one of his best-known works and is also printed in school books. In it, Pi Chun-deuk recalls the memories of a Japanese girl whom he met during his stay in Japan.

In 1947 the author published all of his lyrical works about nature and a child's heart in one volume, the Collection of Lyric Poetry ( 서정시 집 ). In 1969 he published another collection of poems Coral and Pearl ( 산호 와 진주 ). In addition to lyrical works, Pi Chun-deuk also wrote theoretical essays, including a. an essay entitled Essay ( 수필 ), in which he deals with the nature and characteristics of this literary form. In further essays he dealt with works of English literature ( Shakespeare's sonnets , Elizabethan poets ).

He died on May 25, 2007.
