The 5109  m high Margherita Peak (also Pic Marguerite or Eng. Margherita Peak ) is the highest peak of Mount Stanley , the highest mountain in the East African Ruwenzori Mountains and the fourth highest mountain on the continent . It is located as part of the Ruwenzori about 40 km north of the equator and forms a section of the elongated East African Rift Valley between Lake Albert in the north and Lake Eduard in the south. The border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda runs over the summit of the Margherita Peak .

Although Margherita Peak is close to the equator, it is glaciated from around 4800  m - but the summit itself is ice-free. On the east side of the mountain - on the saddle between Margherita and Alexandra Peak is the Margherita Glacier, to the west of this saddle the Alexandra Glacier. In addition to these glaciers, there are a number of other firn and snow fields , mainly in the saddle on the north ridge that leads to Albert Peak .

Third highest mountain in Africa

Board at the summit of Margherita Peak with the inscription:
Welcome to Margherita Peak 16763 ft (5109 m) the highest point in Uganda

The Margherita Peak is the third highest point in Africa after the mountains in the mountain massifs of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, which are hundreds of kilometers further east . However, this only applies if one ignores the 5148  m high Mawenzi in the first-mentioned massif. The peculiarity of Margherita Peak is that it is the highest African mountain that is not of volcanic origin.

Margherita and neighboring peaks

  • Margherita Peak / Pic Marguerite ( 5109  m ), its height is sometimes also put at 5110  m , 5119  m or 5120  m ; its summit lies exactly on the border of the DR Congo and Uganda
  • Alexandra Peak ( 5091  m ) - DR Congo
  • Albert Peak ( 5087  m ) - DR Congo

First ascent

The first ascent was made by Ludwig Amadeus of Savoy in 1906. He named the summit after Queen Margherita of Italy .
