description

Vegetative characteristics

Picea aurantiaca grows as an evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 45 meters and diameters of up to 1 meter at chest height . The gray-brown trunk bark is furrowed and divided into irregularly large, rough plates. The bare bark of the branches is bluish gray in color.

The resinous winter buds are conical to conical-ovoid. The strong, blue-green needles are 1 to 2 centimeters long and around 0.1 to 0.2 centimeters wide and are linear in shape and have a square to diamond-shaped cross-section. Its tip is pointed and piercing. There are four to eight stoma lines on each needle side .

Generative characteristics

Picea aurantiaca is monoecious-segregated ( monoecious ). The cones are elongated-elliptical to cylindrical in shape with a length of 5 to 16 centimeters and a thickness of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. They are initially green in color and turn light brown to reddish brown as they ripen in September or October. The seed scales rarely have a two-lobed tip, are obovate and about 2 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters wide. Their edges are serrated. The elliptical seeds are about 4 millimeters long and have an elongated, obovate wing, which is about 11 millimeters long.

Occurrence and endangerment

Picea aurantiaca is a locally endemic Kangding County in the western part of Sichuan Province, China . It is questionable whether there are also deposits in the southeastern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region .

Picea aurantiaca thrives at altitudes of 2600 to 3600 meters, especially in montane coniferous forests.

Picea aurantiaca is classified as "Endangered" in the IUCN Red List . It is pointed out, however, that a new review of the hazard is necessary. Arbitrary logging together with a lack of protective measures is named as the main risk .

Systematics

The species Picea aurantiaca belongs to the series Asperatae of the sub-section Picea from the section Picea in the sub-genus Picea within the genus ( Picea )

The first description as Picea aurantiaca was in 1906 by Maxwell Tylden Masters in Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany , Volume 37, page 420. It is also considered by some authors as a variety of the bristle spruce ( Picea asperata ) and is then called Picea asperata var. aurantiaca (mast.) boom out.
